「でも一つ、忠告しとく。いくらはき心地がいいからって、四六時中その靴に足を突っ込むのは、よくないと思うよ。」
「なぜですか？」
「あまりにも、お嬢さんの足に合いすぎてるからさ。外から見ただけでも、怖いくらいだ。ずれがなさすぎるんだよ。靴と足の境目が、ほとんど消えかかっているじゃないか。靴が足を侵し始めてる証拠だよ。」
「オカス？」
「ああそうだ。ごくまれに、そういうすごい靴があるんだよ。足を侵しちゃうような靴がね。俺も一度だけ、四十二年前にこれと同じタイプの靴を磨いたことがある。だから分かるんだ。悪いことは言わない。それをはくのは、一週間に一度くらいにするんだな。そうじゃなきゃお嬢さん、自分の足をなくすことになるよ。」（薬指の標本 by 小川洋子)
“But I’ll give you one warning; I think it’s a bad idea to keep your feet in those shoes all the time just because they feel comfortable.”
” Why is that?”
“Because they fit your feet too well. Just looking at them makes me scared. There is no gap. You see, the border between the shoes and your feet is almost completely gone. That’s a piece of evidence that your shoes are eating away your feet.”
“Eating away?”
“Correct. It’s quite rare but there are amazing shoes like that, shoes that can eat away feet. I’ve once polished shoes of the same kind, forty-two years ago. That’s how I know. It’s for your own good — wear them only once a week or so. Otherwise, Miss, you’ll end up losing your feet.”
