Really really old m&m cookies.

Not really. These are really really old relic pieces found in one of the oldest burial hills in Japan, containing beads and other jewerly balls.

    It is definitely pretty icky-looking; what are those beads stuck in? But I always thought it was fascinating that Buddhist relics were thought to take the form of crystal spheres and beads, and not more somatic objects like bones and whatnot. Amazing that the “true body” of the Buddha (this is sometimes engraved on reliquaries) should take the form of balls of crystal and lapis lazuli.

    Also, if those come from a kofun, you wonder where they came from in the first place (since Buddhism was pretty new to Japan when they were still building those tombs). Was it necessary to import them from India, or would China or Korea be good enough? Hmmm….time to do some research.
