When I think of the “turn of the century” in 19/20th centuries, I think of all these brown pictures with ladies and gentlemen and get the impression of old modernness.

But then, I’ve experienced the turn of the century as well and when I superimpose my –00 with 1900, I feel less advanced. I think about the people in 80 years looking back at our pictures – probably yellowed by then — and feeling the old modernness in us.

When I think of people who were born in 1881, that’s like when Shubert was still alive and it had been only 50 years or so since Beethoven died. Beethoven was somebody like Duke Ellington to us back then. And Duke will be like Beethoven as I will be like a person born in 1881 in 80 years or so.

I feel less modern.
