WA Rainier #2! (mid May 2021)
To be updated.
We summited Mt. Rainier again!
- Went with M, B, L, and Ana.
- It was a perfect sunny weather with no wind for the whole week!
- This was an expedition seminar, so we learned a lot of skills including crevasse rescue, ice climbing in a crevasse, ascender/rappel use, ice crampon use etc etc.
- Hiked up to Camp Muir on Monday and summited on Wed night/Thu morning.
- Saw a helicopter rescue for a person with a broken leg.
- Heard and saw an ice fall in Nisqually Valley.
- Our rope leader was Jack Delaney and lead guide was Dave Hahn.
- Training was mostly from trying to stay fit during the pandemic (biked/ran 4-5 days/week). Tilly Jane was a good training for climbing with a heavy pack. We also did a century mile ride to Enumclaw and bike+hike on Tiger Mountain (3 laps ~12 miles, 6100ft). Saw a bunch of other people training for Rainier and Baker with packs.
- Decided to buy a mid-layer jacket (Arc’teryx Atom LT Insulated Hoodie). This is a very useful piece of jacket.
- Rented a helmet, crampons, a heavy weight jacket, and a harness with a locking carabiner. I swapped the Bight heavy weight jacket with the Mountain Hardwear jacket.
- Duct tape mostly prevented blisters this time; my left arch and heel are the weak spots for these boots.
